Poll : Lamest part of McCain's latest gaffe

McCain is almost as bad an orator as he would be a President.  If he can't read off a teleprompter, he should read off cards or even come up with a thought that hasn't been thoroughly pasteurized by his staff (Straight Talk!).  While the "beer" mistake was funnier and I can't wait to see what Stewart/Colbert do with it, it wasn't the lamest part to me.

Here are the candidates:

1. Saying "beer" instead of bill.  I guess its an easy mistake since we've all vetoed random contents of our refrigerator when the budget gets tight.

2. Intellectual incoherence.  McCain was trying to make a strong statement and just ended up contradicting himself in a single breath.  "If that power is entrusted to me, I will use the veto as needed.  I will veto every single beer... bill will earmarks and every single bill that comes across my desk, I'll make them famous."  I guess this would qualify for simple incoherence as well for the ending.  Will he use the veto "as needed" or on every bill with earmarks?  Anyone with any knowledge of how the legislature works knows that earmarks are not fundamentally corrupt or pork, and that its an important power of the legislature to determine where the money it allocates goes.  John McCain has not hesitated to earmark in the Senate.

3. The prop.  As the video ends, John McCain reaches into his jacket and pulls out a Sharpee (he couldn't reach his sock).  McCain might as well have mumbled "Take pen out of pocket and hold up" off his teleprompter.  I've seen pre-schoolers who follow a script more naturally.

I expect incoherence and dishonesty from a Republican.  But you'd think he could match up to his party's standard in ridiculous prop posturing.

Uh, I think you got one thing wrong. (none / 0)

McCain is one of the few who hasn't earmarked.

Isn't it just for his state though? Is it possible to earmark for other things besides projects in your state? Or is that not common practice?

Traditionally, "earmarking" refers to the process of putting money aside for projects in your state in a bill.  Congress actually has informal rules for how much each lawmaker gets to use per year.

They say, all pork is earmarked, but not all earmarks are pork.  Some earmarks go to essential things, like bridge reconstruction.

I should probably add something to the discussion (2.00 / 2)

The Senate voted yesterday 83-14 to approve legislation forcing the disclosure of earmarked expenditures in appropriations bills, requiring campaigns to pay more for the use of corporate jets and preventing departing senators from lobbying their former colleagues for two years.

Mr. Feingold stood as a key supporter of the ethics measure, but Mr. McCain denounced it in no uncertain terms.

"It's one of the many shams that we have tried to inflict on the American people," Mr. McCain said Wednesday as he addressed business leaders in Silicon Valley. "It's a joke and it's again going to contribute overtime, I think, to further abuse of your tax dollars and more cynicism on the part of the American people."

By contrast, Mr. Feingold hailed the bill as a "landmark" that will deliver long overdue changes to the way Congress does business. "The bill before us is a very strong piece of reform legislation," the Wisconsin Democrat said in remarks prepared for the Senate floor.

Somehow I'm taking Feingold's side on congressional spending issues.  I know, it's crazy, but he's the only one of the two whose name is on the McCain-Feingold law that hasn't broken campaign finance laws recently.

I am proud (none / 0)

of my senator's courage on this and a host of other issues such as the Patriot Act.

Well yeah. (2.00 / 2)

He's very possibly the best Senator currently in office, with regards to ethics issues.

Re: Well yeah. (none / 0)

I've never met him yet actually. But I plan to as soon as he does more of his touring around the state. But I think it is important that we get more Democrats in his mold in the senate.

A lot of people (none / 0)

won't support a beer-basher. There goes the NASCAR fan vote. Most people like to have a beer on the Fourth of July, too. Clearly, McCain hates independence and freedom.

Even John McCain lusts after teh engels.
